The Audio Guides of Terre Carricine:
Listen and live history through their beautiful arts and landscapes
The district of “Terre Carricine” in the province of Chieti embraces an extraordinary natural park between the Sangro and Aventino rivers and with the Maiella massif as a backdrop. Established in 2020, its mission is to rise and expand a wave of cultural, landscape and enogastronomic tourism in the towns located in its area: Altino, Casoli, Gessopalena, Montenerodomo, Pennadomo, Roccascalegna and Torricella Peligna. Once dominated by Sanniti Carricini, this territory was lately conquered by the Romans, as proved by archaeological remains in Juvanum, near Montenerodomo, and the findings in Cluviae near Casoli. Along the centuries, such a primitive mosaic of Abruzzo landscapes has fascinated many travellers from abroad for “its peculiar beauty, dignified and harmonious”.
Ancient history left aside, despite their common origin those mountain villages today have different economies, stories and traditions and they compete not for mass but for quality tourism, which has recently focused on the evergreen beauty of Abruzzo mountains and hills. Hence history, traditions, arts, eminent people and leisure activity shall be better known, as they have shaped the cultural and civil life in Terre Carricine.
Listening to the audioguides installed in the most outstanding places to visit in each town you can discover, in a few minutes, the most meaningful and recognisable monuments and attractions. Here are some examples, briefly.
The old town of Altino, whose origins date to the Middle Ages, is perched on a panoramic hill where the parish church stands out with the noble mansion Palazzo Sirolli. The town is known for its sweet pepper. Casoli, with its Ducal Castle, which is a national monument, has written historic pages during World War II. Today it is a museum of local arts and traditions and also displays archaeological findings from the ancient roman town of Cluviae. Gessopalena keeps memory of the latest tragic World War in the ancient borough, completely collapsed and now turned into an open-air museum, whose wounds are always visible and permeated by melancholy.
Piazza Benedetto Croce is at the core of Montenerodomo in its highest part, where are the main civil, social and religious buildings. Until last century there was also the house of the Croce family, the most eminent and wealthiest of the town together with the family of the jurist Giuseppe De Thomasis. The impressive Parco delle Lisce is the symbol of Pennadomo, its unique heritage. The old town medieval plan stretches from Piazza dell’Unione, through Via San Nicola to the last houses below the smooth stone of Santa Maria, where the church of San Nicola di Bari was built in 1141.
The identity of Roccascalegna is strictly connected to its spectacular Medieval Cstle among the most celebrated in Abruzzo. Another historic monument is the late Romanic style Benedictine Abbey of San Pancrazio dating back to 829 winded in a mystic sacredness. Torricella Peligna is well known nationally and even abroad for its John Fante Festival dedicated to the American writer who was born in Torricella. The Medialibrary, which is named after him, also hosts a small archaeological museum celebrating the memory of a VI century “Italic Warrior” found in the area.
