Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives
“It is with great pride and great emotion that I accept the citizenship of this wonderful place and the key to the city of Montenerodomo. And now that I have the key, I certainly have to come back”. By these words Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the US House of Representative thanked the Major Angelo Piccoli for the honorary citizenship she was awarded on the occasion of her visit to the birthplace of her grandfather Tommaso Fedele D’Alessandro. The awarding ceremony was held in Piazza Benedetto Croce, where the Major explained that: “Interpreting the feelings and wishes of the citizens, the Town Council of Montenerodomo has the honour of conferring honorary citizenship to the Honourable Speaker Nancy Patrizia D’Alessandro Pelosi for her exemplary affection to the birthplace of her Ancestors and for having contributed through her civil and social commitment in giving prestige and honour to the community of Montenerodomo”.
On the first July 2022, the eminent native of the United States “came back home” to Montenerodomo from where Tommaso Fedele D'Alessandro, her father’s father, left in 1891 to emigrate to the USA. Tommaso was born on 11 September 1868 and was only 22 when he left to America and never came back. He became a worker and married in Maryland where Thomas Jr, Nancy’s father, was born. The latter was elected in the Congress for five terms and was the Major of Baltimore for three terms. "My father – said Nancy – worshipped his father and drew special strength from him, who has always been a reference. He has had a big influence on our entire family".
After a private visit to her cousins of Francesco Passalacqua family, Nancy Pelosi, her husband and her 16 family members, visited the Church where her grandfather was baptized and e laid flowers to the War Memorial. Then she stayed on to greet the children of the town and to shake hands to the residents before flying back to the USA.
